Deck the Shack

  Welcome to our shack in the woods.  My hubby, Mr. Funky Junk from the Country built this amazing one room shack just outside our woods in our backyard.  

  The story behind our little shack goes a little like this.......We went to Indiana to look at an old rusty pick up to use as yard art.  We ended up purchasing two old rusty pick ups, an old flat bed truck and a vintage bicycle basket.  Three trips to Indiana in the fall and an idea was born.  The gentleman that we purchased the rusty trucks from had a little shack that he had built next to his barn.  It was a one room shack built with old windows, an old door and shutters. We peeked through the windows to see a table and six chairs, several empty bottles from a leftover party and cards on the table.  Apparently it was definitely a man cave. 

  During those three round trip rides to Indiana my hubby had plenty of time to plan his own little shack.  

  Fast forward several years...... You will find us out back enjoying the shack in the spring, summer and fall with friend.  The "L" shaped porch is tiny, yet perfect for a vintage rocker or two.

  My hubby searched Craigslist for the old windows and the door was a roadside resue, free! A green metal roof and solar power. Yes, it has lights and a stereo system.  Can't live without old time rock n roll music playing in the woods.

Vintage Oil Can Ornament

Vintage Oil Can Ornament Holders

  Welcome to the holidays, where I use everything I can find to have a beautifully decorated home!  My decorating tastes have changed over the years, lucky for my beautiful daughter.  {{I am giving her everything I no longer use or want! }}

  My design style leans toward chic & shabby mixed with Bohemian vintage!  That's why I created these fabulous ornament holders.  How did I do it?

 

  This summer I went to a barn sale and there was a bucket full of old oil cans.  I have seen numerous ideas on Pinterest of different projects involving oil cans, so I picked them up.  The entire bucketful was only $5.00, and there was oil in a couple of them!  

  

  The old rusty wire we picked up at a garage sale for a $1.00!  You can never have enough rusty wire available for projects. 

  The Christmas bulbs were in a box I purchased at an auction for $ 10.00. That box was full of awesome Christmas treasures.  You just never know what you are going to find.  

  First, I cleaned the oil cans out!  Who knows how long that oil has been in that can?  I wanted the old patina on the outside and no oil on the inside.  

  I straightened the wire and cut it about 18 inches in length.  If that is to long, you can always adjust it by cutting it to the desired length.  Insert it into the top of the oil can from the bottom.  Crimp a loop in the bottom of the wire, then pull the wire.  The wire will become lodged in the top of the can, make sure it is pulled tight, so it will not shift once you place your bulb on it.  Next up, is to place the loop in the top, to hold your bulb.  I wrapped the wire around an oil Sharpie marker. Use a pair of pliers, the wire can be tough on your hands!

  Screw the top back on your oil can and then adjust your wire.  Several of mine have a larger loop or are taller.  Use your creativity.  Anything is possible!  

  Now you are ready to attach your bulb!  

  I'm happy I took several photos of these, because I sold them all! 💗

My little Christmas tree farm!

 

 

  Is it Christmas yet? No, not quite time! Well it feels like Christmas here in N.W. Ohio.  I was out decorating the shack last Sunday and it was snowing.  It didn't slow me down a bit.  That will be left for another post!  Oh how I become distracted! 

 I have been busy with Christmas decor and decorating.  My favorite project last year was making door knob Christmas trees and my very own little Christmas tree farm.  I made about 10-12 trees and sold them all.

  So, I have been collecting old & vintage door knobs all year long to make them again.  This time I am keeping several for myself!  After making them I take photos of them and off they go to the Maumee Antique Mall. Each year I tell myself "I am keeping some for myself", not!  

  So this leads me to this blog post......how to make these adorable trees, for yourself or to give as a gift.   These make fabulous hostess gifts.  

  What do you need to complete this project? 

  1.  Door knobs, brass, glass, metal any type you can come up with.  I purchase mine at auctions, flea markets and garage sales.  If at all possible I don't pay more than $4.00 for a pair of knobs.  

  2.  Bottle brush Christmas trees, any little pine tree decoration.  These trees can be purchased at the craft stores in several different sizes and colors.

  3.  Hot glue gun and glue sticks.  

  {{These are way to big!  But, they are so pretty! }}

  4.  Tiny, little, small ball ornaments. Any little {{I mean really little}} ornament will work. The decorations are optional.  I sell them plain, just the same! 

  I remove the bottom from the bottle brush trees.  You will not need them, but save them.  {{You never know when you will need them for something else.}}

  Make sure the door knobs are clean and the center opening is clear.  Also make sure the screw is in the door knob. No worry, if there is not a screw, place a piece of duck tape over the hole.  That keeps the hot glue from coming out that little hole in the door knob.  

  Take the hot glue gun and release the glue into the door knob hole.  Make sure to have your bottle brush tree ready to place in the hole at the top of the door knob.  The glue will set up after a couple of minutes, so be ready!  I hold the tree in place until the hot glue sets.  

  If you don't want to decorate your tree you are done! Easy peasy and so cute! If you want your tree decorated, start hanging your tiny ornaments.  On my silver trees I place a small dot of hot glue on the branch, so the ornaments do not fall off!  

  It's time for a photo shoot!  Yes, share your creativity with your family and friends.  Again these make fabulous hostess gifts, as you have created then with love! 💗

  I also made several trees with vintage & old perfume bottles as the base.  Just as beautiful.  Use your imagination for the base, if it is vintage and cute, try it! Anything goes...💗
